84th Annual Meeting of the Rural Sociological Society

January 21, 2021

Dear Members of the Rural Sociological Society,

We are sure at this point that you are wondering what to expect with regard to the 2021 RSS meetings. The RSS Executive Council has for the last number of weeks been weighing our options given the continued pandemic, the health concerns of us all, and the logistic effects the pandemic has had on institutional budgets supporting travel.

All of these issues taken into account, including the continued uncertainties of vaccine availability, have led us to decide to move our conference to an online format with weekly sessions starting in spring 2021, and select sessions (including the presidential address, the awards ceremony, keynote speakers, and the business meeting) also held online during the pre-established dates of the conference, July 29- August 1.

Assuming that the nation’s public health circumstances will gradually return to something approaching normal over the course of 2021, we hope to return to an in-person annual meeting in 2022, when we will be meeting in Denver, and Burlington the year after.

Under the circumstances, we have tried to come up with some creative solutions to organizing opportunities for RSS members to convene. We decided that trying to hold a full virtual meeting within the space of four days would simply be too logistically complex, too expensive, and to taxing on our members who have already logged more hours on zoom videoconferencing than they ever dreamed.

Instead, the Program Committee has decided to largely turn session organization over to the RIGs and several of the committees. The RIGs and Committees will then take the lead in organizing and scheduling sessions over the period of weeks leading up to the scheduled conference time. As we hammer out the details and work with RIG chairs, we will send out further information.

We thank you for your patience through all of this, and we extend our best wishes to you for a happy, healthy, and productive new year. And we hope to see you, at least virtually, in the weeks and months ahead.
