2020 Call for Special Papers and Sessions

Feminist Structured Sessions

Gender and Sexualities RIG, Rural Sociological Society

The Gender and Sexualities Research Interest Group (RIG) is seeking papers and session proposals that promote feminist approaches to rural topics and issues. We are looking for panels or papers that promote critical and self-reflective dialogue, uplift under-privileged or under-represented voices, analyze systems of power, support activism and change, and challenge “expert” knowledges. We are particularly interested in panels or presentations that may do this in original and inclusive ways, that encourage participation, collaboration, and creativity, either with the audience or among panelists.

While we are looking for thoughtful and innovative ideas, some proposals may include:

  • Co-presenting research with a community member; Presenting work from a community member collaborator if they are not able to travel and attend
  • Creating panels that include different aspects of gender identity, including historians, poets, artists, musicians, etc.
  • Identifying alternative ways to present your research: video, music, etc.
  • Facilitating discussions around a certain topic in the form of “consciousness raising”

We are particularly interested in topics that address the following, with an intersectional lens:

  • Sexuality in rural areas
  • Masculinity
  • The experience of rural gender and sexuality beyond agricultural production

To submit a paper or session you can enter your abstract directly through the ExOrdo link on the RSS Website  In the abstract box please mention that your abstract should be considered for “Feminist Structured Sessions”. The deadline for submitting papers and sessions has been extended to Monday, February 17, 2020, at 11:59 pm (CST)
